This summer, the Saint-Malo Golf Resort is celebrating its 35th anniversary. This is an opportunity to honor Hubert Chesneau, the visionary architect and founder of the Saint-Malo Golf Resort.
In 1986, the Saint-Malo Golf Resort was established in the town of Le Tronchet. With support from the city of Saint-Malo, the town decided to develop the former hunting grounds of the privateer Robert Surcouf. To design the course, they enlisted the help of architect Hubert Chesneau, who would later become the architect of the national golf course.
“A golf course architect must be a good golfer!” Hubert Chesneau took up golf at age 14 in Dakar on a course designed by his father. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become an architect, but he also became atop-tier golfer and an international referee. His experience shines through in his designs: he loves athletic challenges. “It’s best to know the game well, have a creative streak, and understand the characteristics of the courses you play. Soccer fields and tennis courts have fixed rules and dimensions. Anyone can build a tennis court. A golf course is a different story.”
The Saint-Malo Golf Resort features two courses: The 18-hole “Surcouf” course winds its way through the Breton countryside. The 9-hole “Old Course” adds variety to our golf offerings for all players, including beginners.
Hubert Chesneau places as much importance on the athletic challenge as on visual appeal. He has skillfully designed his course to blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the landscape.
This 100-hectare estate stretches between Mirloup Pond, the granite massifs, and the Mesnil Forest. The Saint-Malo Golf Resort showcases the beauty of the Breton countryside on a site rich in history. The Saint-Malo Golf Resort is thus the largest golf course in Brittany.
In 1994, Serge Raulic, CEO of the Thermes Marins de Saint-Malo, fell in love with the site. As a golf enthusiast, he bought it to breathe new life into it. In 2003, Serge Raulic had a hotel built in the heart of the estate, respecting the architecture of the former priory. Since 2020, the Saint-Malo Golf Resort hotel has been rated four stars.
